Warning to sun-seeking benefit claimants & advice for UK Services for Expats in Spain

"SUN-seeking benefit claimants are being warned they could be breaking the law.

Leaving the UK for any length of time can affect someone's entitlement to benefits, and people are being urged to check with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) before they jet off abroad.

DWP has extended their 'We're closing in' anti-benefit fraud campaign to cover 15 major airports across the UK, including Newcastle.

 

Adverts will shortly be appearing in the airport terminals and in magazines on board some budget airline flights, warning people they may be committing benefit fraud while abroad, a crime estimated to have cost UK taxpayers £44m last year. 

Clare Grummett, unit fraud investigator for the Fraud Investigation Service said: "We know the vast majority of people claiming benefits are honest, law-abiding citizens, but we are closing in on the small minority who are relaxing in the sun at the taxpayer's expense. 

"Travelling overseas for any period of time and for whatever reason, however, may affect your claim, so before you go, speak to the office that pays your benefit." "
