New regulations have been issued in relation to the introduction next year of a new housing benefit subsidy scheme for claims from those living in temporary accommodation.
In force from 1 April 2010, the Income-related Benefits (Subsidy to Authorities) (Temporary Accommodation) Amendment Order 2009 (SI.No.2580/2009) provides for the current scheme (known as thresholds and caps) to be replaced with a new method of determining subsidy for housing benefit claimants living in temporary accommodation using a new set of formulae that relates to the type, location and size of the properties in which claimants have been placed.
- encourage more local authorities to charge a fair market rent for the type and location of the property occupied;
- make a reasonable contribution to local authorities' costs of leasing and managing temporary accommodation; and
- control the overall level of housing benefit expenditure on claimants living in temporary accommodation.
The new regulations are contained in Statutory Instrument reference - 2580/2009
