London borough leaders have voted to increase the budget for a pan-London grants scheme from £17.691 million to £20.767 million.
This decision follows a supplementary consultation launched after a High Court ruling that the equalities work in the original consultation late last year required a further level of detail.
Following extensive legal advice as well as advice from Local Government Improvement and Development (LGID) and a number of boroughs, the supplementary consultation looked at the equalities impacts on each commission - as opposed to only the umbrella headings under which these commissions were funded.
Results from the supplementary consultation, as well as from the original consultation, have been used to inform this new decision - made after it was found that some commissions did not fit into the same category as their umbrella headings.
The new budget reflects the recategorisation of those commissions and the extra costs incurred through the judicial review. The net effect of these re-categorisations is an increase in grants of around £1.1 million from the budget recommended in December 2010.
62 commissions will be added to the A* category (commissions that meet the principles for a London-wide programme and which address one or more of the scheme’s priority areas) and will be funded through the scheme.

"We are very pleased that London Councils has announced on 10.05.11 an extra £3 million into their pan-London grants programme following the outcome of a Judicial Review which held that they had not complied with the equalities duties.
However we are still deeply saddened by the overall disproportionate cuts to this scheme, resulting in the loss of funding to 215 projects that support many of the most disadvantaged Londoners. At a time of huge cuts in public services; cuts to welfare and other benefits and cuts to voluntary and community sector organisations across the capital it is a severe blow to Londoners...."
