Summary

The latest national statistics on the 2nd provisional outturn figures of local authority capital expenditure and receipts in the financial year April 2009 to March 2010 was released on 2 September 2010 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The latest statistics release includes data from 2005-06 to 2009-10 and updates those statistics previously released on 10 September 2009 and 29 June 2010.

  • The underlying trend in capital expenditure shows an increase of 8 per cent from 2008-09 to 2009-10, to £21.3 billion
  • Capital expenditure has risen by 28 per cent in the last four years, nearly 16 per cent in real terms
  • Capital receipts remain well below the 2007-08 level, at £1.4 billion. This reflects a drop in the sale of assets by local authorities
