Thought I would mention the subject of claiming Incapacity Benefit & work as I received a query on it today. It is not a subject that often comes up but if you are considering some from of part time work you may have questions.
This type of work is called "permitted work".
You have to meet the following criteria as per the Directgov website,
- Your doctor will need to approve or/and you may need a medical test.
- There is a "cap" of 16 hours per week.
- There is a "cap" on how much you can earn, £20 a week for an unlimited period or £92.00, subject to further detail - click here
- You may be liable for Income Tax
- Your earning will be taken into account when assessing other benefits.
I have to say, from the feedback I receive, none has been positive about going down this route.
If work is for a part time and/or fixed period you may have to undergo not only assessments prior to starting but also when you finish. If other benefits have been changed because of your earnings once you cease earning you may have to be assessed again.
Of course, stating the obvious, if you receive Incapacity Benefit is it understood you are unable to work due to illness or disability.
You of course must decide for yourself.
Thanks to the person who raised this query.
