The House of Commons Service believes in the principles of equality and diversity and works towards embedding these in everything we do.  We are committed to improving and developing inclusive and consistent practices which promote equality of opportunity and participation for all.

Although the House is not legally required to develop an equality scheme, we strongly believe that it is in line with good practice, enhancing the performance and working environment of the House Service, and delivering benefits for all those involved: Members of Parliament, staff and the public.

The Scheme has been endorsed by the House of Commons Commission and the Management Board, and is supported by the Trade Union Side.  The action plan has been drawn up from the consultation exercise to date and builds on many current initiatives, as well as introducing new ways to improve our services.
