Standards and policies for our Statistics
HM Treasury’s statistics are governed by the standards set out by the UK Statistics Authority in their Code of Practice for Official Statistics. The Code of Practice is intended to ensure that all official statistics meet the needs of users; and that the statistics are produced, managed and disseminated to high standards, and explained well.
Currently most of the Treasury's statistical outputs are classed and labelled as National Statistics. Producers of National Statistics have a legal obligation to abide by the Code of Practice. Each of the Treasury's statistical releases identifies which statistical series are National Statistics.
Further detailed information on how we produce our National Statistics, and how we ensure that we comply with the standards set in the Code of Practice, is contained in the internal links to our policy documents below.

Our pre-release access lists:

- for the public expenditure statistical updates (including PESA)
- exceptional pre-release access for the Public Sector Finances statistical bulletin in April 2009
The Treasury does not have any exceptions or exemptions to the application of the Code of practice, or to the principle of protecting confidential data.
Information on the estimated costs to organisations outside of central government in responding to statistical surveys issued by the Treasury group of departments is included in the following document. These cover all our external statistical surveys, which are done for wider purposes - eg returns to the EU - rather than to produce HM Treasury National Statistics releases.

Further external information on the legal framework for official statistics in the UK
The current legislative framework for Official Statistics in the UK was established in the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007. This created the UK Statistics Authority, and required it to prepare and publish the Code of Practice for Official Statistics, and monitor and assess compliance against it. The UK Statistics Authority reports directly to Parliament. Further information is contained in the following links.
