Picked up from www.ukcab.net (you can join this by the way, it is free).

The Centre for ALL Families Positive Health (CAFPH) lodged a job advertisement with their local Jobcentre Plus for a "Children and Young People Services Manager". There was no mention at his point that it would be working with people who had HIV.

Any person who was interested in this position could then request an application pack giving full details of the role and job on offer.

The job has been advertised for the last month and although they have sent out about a dozen application packs they have not yet received a single application back.

They have though been told that the Jobcentre had received a response from one client who requested an application pack.

A complaint saying they were very annoyed that when they received the pack it mentioned that the candidate would be working with children & young people who are living with HIV.

I spoke to the lady at CAFPH who has been dealing with this. Thanks are due to her for also allowing me to write about this here.

"The lady I spoke to seemed to intimate that may be we should have included HIV in the advert.  I explained to her that I did not feel that the complaint was legitimate and advised her that next time she should inform any one who complains that we are under no obligation to do that.  I gave her an example if a school is advertising for a teacher they do not include in their advert that the teacher might be working with a child living with HIV or any other disease."

We engage with the DWP on a regular basis as we feel overall their treatment of HIV/AIDS as a condition and of people living with it lacks proper understanding and lacks proper training when it comes to staff working in all sections of the department. I will write to seek some clarification here if only to highlight yet another issue with HIV & the DWP.
