Age Scotland writes to the Herald Scotland citing figures uncovered by Policy Exchange report Careless that suggest that more adequate care for the elderly brings economic savings.
"There is also evidence from studies by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Policy Exchange that indicate that for every extra £1 spent on a range of services to promote health, wellbeing and independence for older people, there is approximately a £1.20 additional benefit in preventing or delaying the need for higher intensity (and more expensive) care. The Policy Exchange evaluation found that overnight hospital stays were reduced by 47% and use of A&E departments by 29%."
