Fit note dilemma as GPs lack knowledge to advise employers

The fit note was introduced in April in an attempt to get people back to work faster after illness. It is supposed to allow GPs to advise employers what activities individuals can do at work rather than just signing them off sick.

But employers present at a CBI sickness absence conference today warned a lack of knowledge on the part of the GP about an individual’s work environment is standing in the way of doctors’ making a valuable assessment. Click here to read the full article.

Fit note let down by doctors' illegible handwriting

The “fit note”, which replaced the sick note in April in an attempt to get people back to work faster after illness, has come under fire from employers who say they cannot read GPs’ scrawls.

The Department for Work and Pensions had spent months developing the new note – which says what an employee can do rather than just signing them off sick – only now to admit the most fundamental of issues has been overlooked. Click here to read more.
