Baroness Campbell of Surbiton hosts All Party Parliamentary Disability Group Reception; RADAR launches MPs’ Guide on Disability.
Baroness Campbell of Surbiton yesterday hosted a reception for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Disability to promote and increase dialogue between disabled people and Parliamentarians: MPs and Peers.
MPs and Peers, including Lord Freud, the Minister for Welfare Reform, and Lynne Featherstone, Minister for Equalities, and over 80 disabled people and representatives of disability groups attended this highly successful and lively event.
Also at the reception RADAR, which facilitates the All Party Parliamentary Disability group, launched the 2010 edition of its MPs’ Guide on Disability, an information booklet designed to ensure that MPs are fully equipped to meet the needs of, and to represent, their disabled constituents.
Liz Sayce, Chief Executive of RADAR, said:
“It is absolutely vital that Parliamentary representatives are accessible to disabled people, and we have made a significant contribution to this today. RADAR’s MPs’ Guide on Disability has set the standard for and shown the way for 5 years, and can be found on the bookshelf of every MP. I would like to thank all the MPs, Peers, and disabled people who attended this event today and the sponsor HSBC who made this possible.”
Baroness Campbell of Surbiton said:
“Disabled people have a very important saying: "nothing about us, without us". MPs will be asked to comment and give their views on a whole range of government policy initiatives which impact on the lives of disabled people. They must therefore feel confident about involving us properly in their representations to government. This guide will be an essential tool for doing that job well.”
