Brighton and Hove's finance councillors must not dip into the city's AIDS support grant to help fill other budget gaps say the Liberal Democrats.

Ring-fencing has been removed from central government grants which are passed to councils to administer.

Last year the grant stood at £455,000, confirmation of this year's figure is currently being checked.

Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood raised the issue at this week's Overview and Scrutiny Commission,

Paul said:
"Let me be clear that I will actively oppose any attempt to dip into the AIDS support grant in order to balance the books in other areas.

"This grant is a vital lifeline for local people living with HIV/AIDS and like other grants is already under pressure due to tight budgets.

"Any reduction to what the government gives the city will not be acceptable and will be resisted when it comes to council for decision."
